Name: Kobresia simpliciuscula - Trichophorum pumilum Saturated Herbaceous Vegetation Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of... Description: This plant association is found in extreme rich fens in the high altitude park of South Park in Colorado. This association is found at elevations of 2730-3060 m (8960-10,040 feet). Extreme rich fens are small-patch communities confined to specific environments defined by groundwater discharge, soil chemistry, and peat accumulation of at least 40 cm. Fens form at low points in the landscape at or near slopes where groundwater intercepts the soil surface. The water chemistry is distinct in that it contains high levels of calcium and magnesium. The association is characterized by the presence of <i>Kobresia simpliciuscula</i> (25-60% cover) and <i>Trichophorum pumilum (= Scirpus pumilus)</i> (7-30% cover) on hummocks in the wetter end of the hydrologic gradient of the fen. <i>Trichophorum pumilum</i> does not occur as consistently as <i>Kobresia simpliciuscula</i> and is often inconspicuous within the plant association stand. Other plants (with percent cover) that occur on the hummocks include <i>Thalictrum alpinum</i> (10-60%), <i>Kobresia myosuroides</i> (10%), <i>Juncus arcticus</i> (5-10%), and <i>Salix candida</i> (5%). The swales beneath the hummocks contain stands of <i>Carex aquatilis, Carex simulata, Eleocharis quinqueflora</i>, and <i>Triglochin</i> sp.
