Name: Pinus contorta var. murrayana - Populus tremuloides / Artemisia tridentata / Poa pratensis Forest
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This forest association is currently only known from Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. This forest grows between 2130 and 2740 m (7000-9000 feet) of elevation on north and east aspects. Stands are found in valley bottoms or along streams, with soils that are seasonally or permanently flooded. Soils are sands to silty loams derived from granite. This forest is characterized by a fairly continuous canopy of Populus tremuloides and Pinus contorta between 15-30 m of height. Individuals of Pinus contorta are sometimes emergent to 50 m. Occasionally Pinus jeffreyi may also be present as trees or saplings. The shrub layer is open, with Artemisia tridentata a diagnostic species. Other important shrubs may include Rosa woodsii and/or Symphoricarpos rotundifolius. The ground layer is dominated by graminoids. Most stands contain Poa pratensis and Bromus carinatus. Other graminoids which may be present at low cover values include Bromus tectorum (exotic), Elymus elymoides, and/or Leymus cinereus. The herbaceous layer is sparse but relatively diverse. Wyethia mollis, Allium bisceptrum, Calochortus superbus, Iris missouriensis, and/or Maianthemum stellatum all occur.
