Description: This association occurs on the slopes of ridges, saddles and benches below 2200 m elevation in the Colorado Plateau and Great Basin. Substrates and soils are variable but tend to be coarse and contain a calcareous element. <i>Juniperus osteosperma</i> forms an open canopy, with a sparse to moderate understory of <i>Artemisia nova</i>. The herbaceous layer tends to be sparse and dominated by graminoids, including <i>Poa secunda</i>.
