Description: This association is described for the western portion of the Northwest Basin and Range, and the Owyhee Uplands ecoregional sections. It occurs on moderate, south- to northeast-facing slopes; on upper slope positions, ridgecrests, or mesa tops; often in association with shallow soil or talus of basalt or rhyolite parent materials. Elevation ranges from 1770 to 1890 m (5800-6200 feet). The overstory is dominated by <i>Cercocarpus ledifolius</i>. <i>Juniperus occidentalis</i> may be present. <i>Symphoricarpos oreophilus, Prunus virginiana, Chrysothamnus</i> spp., and <i>Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana</i> are common understory shrub species which occur with varying abundance. <i>Poa secunda, Leymus cinereus (= Elymus cinereus), Festuca idahoensis, Senecio integerrimus</i>, and <i>Balsamorhiza sagittata</i> are characteristic understory grass and forb species.
