Name: Juncus balticus - (Juncus mexicanus) Herbaceous Vegetation
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This herbaceous association is currently only known from Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands of this association have been found from 1280-2895 m (4200-9500 feet) elevation in seasonally flooded valley bottoms and meadows. Slopes are flat to very gentle, and stands can occur on all aspects. Soils are moderately to poorly drained loams, loamy sand, or clay loams. This seasonally flooded perennial grassland is dominated by Juncus balticus, with Juncus orthophyllus and Juncus mexicanus important species at lower cover. Poa pratensis is also usually present. Forbs are sparse but fairly diverse. Achillea millefolium, Iris missouriensis, and/or Taraxacum officinale (exotic) have the highest frequency, though Mimulus primuloides may be abundant in some stands. Total vegetative cover for this association often exceeds 80%, and the canopy is usually less than 0.5 m in height.
