Name: Juniperus osteosperma / Coleogyne ramosissima Woodland Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of... Description: This woodland association is known only from Canyonlands National Park but likely occurs elsewhere on the Colorado Plateau in Utah. Stands are restricted to mesatops between 1503 and 1625 m elevation on gentle to moderate slopes. Most of the unvegetated surface is bedrock with low to moderate exposure of soil, litter and biological soil crusts. Soils are rapidly drained loamy sands derived from the Kayenta Formation or White Rim sandstone. The vegetation is characterized by an open tree canopy of scattered <i>Juniperus osteosperma</i> with between 5 and 16% cover, and an open shrub (&lt;10% cover) understory dominated by <i>Coleogyne ramosissima</i>. Total vegetation cover does not exceed 30%. Associated shrubs include <i>Artemisia bigelovii, Ephedra viridis, Ephedra torreyana, Yucca angustissima, Eriogonum microthecum, Gutierrezia microcephala, Opuntia erinacea</i>, and <i>Sclerocactus whipplei</i>. Herbaceous species provide sparse cover and may include <i>Achnatherum hymenoides, Sporobolus cryptandrus, Bouteloua gracilis, Vulpia octoflora, Packera multilobata (= Senecio multilobatus), Machaeranthera canescens, Plantago patagonica, Eriogonum alatum, Lepidium montanum, Cryptantha flava, Hymenopappus filifolius</i>, and <i>Comandra umbellata</i>.
