Name: Artemisia filifolia - Ephedra (torreyana, viridis) Shrubland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This shrubland association occurs in Utah and Arizona. It is currently only described from Wupatki National Monument in Arizona. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. This association's elevation ranges from 1335-1490 m (4380-4888 feet) and slope ranges from 0-12%. The substrate is black cinder with a layer of sandstone cobbles. This association is sometimes found in washes or sheetflow areas. Total vegetation cover ranges from 15-30%. Diversity ranges from 7-27 species within the 14 relevés sampled. The shrub layer is not dominated by a single species but rather by a group of species that codominate. Artemisia filifolia is the only consistent shrub to occur within the association and functions as an indicator species. Other shrubs can occur and can dominate or codominate within this association, but they do not have to be present. These main shrubs consist of Ephedra torreyana, Ephedra viridis, Ericameria nauseosa, Gutierrezia sarothrae, and Atriplex canescens. The herbaceous layer is not dominated by a single species.
