Name: Eriogonum sphaerocephalum / Poa secunda Dwarf-shrub Herbaceous Vegetation
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This plant association is described for the Columbia Plateau of southeastern Washington and northeastern Oregon. Stands are also known from the upper Hells Canyon in Idaho. The association occurs on basalt Lithosol sites ranging in elevation from 488 to 945 m (1600-3100 feet) on the Columbia Plateau and 1067 to 1372 m (3500-4500 feet) in the upper Hells Canyon region. The association is characterized by an open dwarf-shrub canopy dominated by Eriogonum sphaerocephalum. The relatively sparse understory is dominated by Poa secunda; Eriogonum thymoides may also be present. Pseudoroegneria spicata and Elymus elymoides are commonly present with low abundance. Forb composition is variable. Trifolium macrocephalum, Balsamorhiza hookeri, Lomatium bicolor var. leptocarpum (= Lomatium leptocarpum), and Allium acuminatum are often present.
