Description: This plant association is found in the Columbia Basin primarily within the Palouse grassland zone. Stands are present on slopes of all aspects. A nearly complete cover of woody species characterizes stands. <i>Crataegus douglasii</i> forms dense thickets over shrub understories dominated by <i>Symphoricarpos albus, Rosa woodsii, Rosa nutkana</i>, and <i>Spiraea betulifolia</i>. A number of herbaceous species may be present including <i>Achillea millefolium, Besseya rubra, Galium boreale, Geranium viscosissimum, Iris missouriensis, Lithophragma parviflorum, Potentilla arguta</i>, and <i>Potentilla gracilis</i>. A few locations have a somewhat short-lived tree layer of <i>Populus tremuloides</i>.
