Name: Pinus elliottii Successional Maritime Woodland
Reference: Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...
Description: This early-successional slash pine vegetation is found on barrier islands along the Georgia coast and possibly similar areas in adjacent states. Pinus elliottii var. elliottii is the dominant canopy species, though Sabal palmetto may be found scattered throughout. Sabal palmetto and Morella cerifera are the most common shrubs. Herb layer species may include Eupatorium capillifolium, Muhlenbergia filipes, Scleria triglomerata, Hydrocotyle bonariensis, Pityopsis graminifolia, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, Toxicodendron radicans, Andropogon virginicus, Houstonia procumbens, and Oplismenus hirtellus. In Georgia, this association has been primarily found on the dune fields directly behind the active foredunes of barrier islands. Many of the sites where it has been found have a history of anthropogenic disturbance. On both Blackbeard and Wassaw islands, this community is extensive where catastrophic prescribed fires have taken place within the last 20 years. In addition, it occurs on St. Catherines Island where cattle once grazed. However, in some places this community may exist as a natural stage of succession and will eventually become a live oak-dominated maritime forest. Thus, the successional nature of this community is currently uncertain.
