Name: Salix caroliniana / Hibiscus grandiflorus / Polygonum punctatum Woodland
Reference: Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...
Description: These seasonally flooded wetlands are found imbedded in live oak-dominated maritime forests in swales between coastal dunes in coastal Georgia and northern Florida. They are characterized by a short (5-10 m) Salix caroliniana-dominated overstory with Hibiscus grandiflorus in the shrub layer. Morella cerifera may also be found scattered in the shrub layer. The herbaceous cover depends on season and water levels in the stand. Polygonum punctatum, Boehmeria cylindrica, and Teucrium canadense are dominant herbs; Ptilimnium capillaceum, Saururus cernuus, Hydrocotyle bonariensis, and others may also be present in the herb layer. Ampelopsis arborea and Mikania scandens are common vines. Quercus virginiana and Sabal palmetto may be overhanging but are not typically rooted in the community.
