Description: This forest is characterized by a mixed canopy generally with <i>Quercus pagoda</i> and <i>Quercus nigra</i> as codominants. It occurs on the loess bluffs of the Mississippi River area of Mississippi, especially at Vicksburg National Military Park. Stands of this forest are characterized by a canopy typically containing <i>Quercus pagoda</i> and <i>Quercus nigra</i> as codominants. Also present as canopy trees are <i>Quercus shumardii, Ulmus rubra, Sassafras albidum, Carya illinoinensis, Liquidambar styraciflua, Pinus taeda, Robinia pseudoacacia</i>, and <i>Fraxinus americana</i>. Subcanopy trees can additionally include <i>Acer negundo, Quercus muehlenbergii, Tilia americana var. caroliniana, Carya cordiformis, Prunus serotina, Ulmus alata, Ulmus americana, Liriodendron tulipifera, Cercis canadensis, Quercus michauxii, Celtis laevigata, Morus rubra, Cornus florida, Ostrya virginiana</i>, and (in Adams and Jefferson counties, Mississippi) <i>Magnolia grandiflora</i>. Shrubs include <i>Carpinus caroliniana, Acer rubrum, Callicarpa americana, Vaccinium arboreum, Vaccinium elliottii, Frangula caroliniana, Toxicodendron radicans, Euonymus americanus, Cornus foemina, Viburnum rufidulum, Lindera benzoin, Asimina triloba, Sideroxylon lycioides, Juniperus virginiana, Diospyros virginiana, Arundinaria gigantea, Acer barbatum, Juglans nigra, Hydrangea quercifolia, Cornus drummondii</i>, and <i>Sambucus canadensis</i>. The exotic shrub <i>Ligustrum sinense</i> is especially common in some disturbed stands. Native vines include <i>Toxicodendron radicans, Gelsemium sempervirens, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, Smilax bona-nox, Ampelopsis arborea, Cocculus carolinus, Smilax tamnoides (= Smilax hispida), Vitis rotundifolia, Vitis cinerea, Smilax glauca, Bignonia capreolata, Smilax rotundifolia, Berchemia scandens</i>, and <i>Celastrus scandens</i>. The most abundant herbaceous plants are <i>Polystichum acrostichoides, Passiflora lutea, Oplismenus hirtellus ssp. setarius (= Oplismenus setarius), Athyrium filix-femina ssp. asplenioides</i>, and <i>Phytolacca americana</i>.
