Description: This forest occurs in wetter sloughs associated with <i>~Quercus michauxii - Quercus pagoda / Clethra alnifolia - Leucothoe axillaris</i> Forest (CEGL007449)$$, on extensive flats with a high water table providing seasonally to semipermanently saturated (and rarely flooded) conditions. This forest is believed to occur from Virginia to Georgia, in the Atlantic Coastal Plain. The canopy is dominated by <i>Quercus laurifolia</i>, with lesser amounts of <i>Nyssa biflora</i> and <i>Acer rubrum var. trilobum</i> often present as well. <i>Clethra alnifolia</i> and <i>Leucothoe axillaris</i> are typical shrubs. Herbs including <i>Osmunda regalis, Saururus cernuus</i>, or <i>Woodwardia areolata</i> may be more abundant than the shrubs.
