Description: These shale barrens are found in the Knobs Region of Kentucky. The canopy is dominated by <i>Quercus prinus</i>, with 10-70% canopy cover. Stands may occasionally contain <i>Pinus virginiana, Quercus velutina, Quercus coccinea, Carya glabra</i>, and <i>Amelanchier arborea</i>. The predominant herbs are <i>Silene caroliniana (ssp. wherryi</i> or possibly <i>ssp. pensylvanica), Danthonia spicata, Dichanthelium</i> spp. (e.g., <i>Dichanthelium depauperatum</i> and/or <i>Dichanthelium linearifolium</i>) <i>Aristida dichotoma, Aristida oligantha</i>, and <i>Potentilla canadensis</i>.
