Description: This is an oak-hickory forest of the Piedmont which is found on various mafic volcanic substrates, including amphibolite. These forests may occur as a matrix surrounding herbaceous glades. The canopy of stands typically contains <i>Quercus prinus, Carya pallida, Quercus stellata, Quercus marilandica, Carya glabra</i>, and <i>Pinus echinata</i>. The subcanopy may contain <i>Carya pallida, Quercus marilandica, Cercis canadensis</i>, and <i>Cornus florida</i>. Shrubs include <i>Rhus copallinum, Ptelea trifoliata, Viburnum rufidulum, Asimina parviflora, Styrax grandifolius, Vaccinium arboreum</i>, and <i>Vaccinium pallidum</i>. The rare shrub <i>Amorpha schwerinii</i> may be present within its limited range. Some woody vines which may be present include <i>Cocculus carolinus</i> and <i>Vitis rotundifolia</i>. Some typical herbs (all of which may have low cover values) may include <i>Schizachyrium scoparium, Tragia urticifolia, Dichanthelium</i> sp., <i>Piptochaetium avenaceum, Coreopsis major, Tephrosia virginiana, Pityopsis graminifolia</i>, and <i>Solidago odora var. odora</i>.
