Name: Quercus macrocarpa - Quercus shumardii - Carya cordiformis / Chasmanthium latifolium Forest
Reference: Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...
Description: This association is found in the United States in the southeastern Great Plains and adjacent Ozark-Ouachita region, ranging from the Arbuckle Mountains of Oklahoma to northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas and adjacent Missouri and Arkansas. Stands occur on floodplains, where they are temporarily flooded for short periods as a result of river flooding, and more rarely on other mesic habitats. Soils are deep, medium-textured and formed in alluvium. The vegetation is dominated by a closed-canopy layer of trees, with Quercus macrocarpa, Quercus shumardii, and Carya cordiformis the major dominants. Other characteristic species include Carya illinoinensis, Frangula caroliniana, Populus deltoides, and Ulmus americana in Oklahoma and Acer negundo, Acer saccharinum, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, and Platanus occidentalis in Kansas. Ground layer species include Carex spp. and Leersia oryzoides.
