Description:
This association covers the widespread longleaf pine communities of dry, coarse, infertile sands, and covers most examples of the Sandhills and inner and middle Coastal Plain, where plants characteristic of the coastal fringe are absent. Stands are dominated by <i>Pinus palustris</i> with a low-diversity scrub oak layer strongly dominated by <i>Quercus laevis</i>. Other trees present include <i>Quercus incana, Quercus laevis, Quercus margarettiae</i>, and <i>Quercus hemisphaerica</i>. One characteristic low shrub is <i>Gaylussacia dumosa (= var. dumosa)</i>. Characteristic herbaceous plants include fairly high cover of <i>Aristida stricta</i>. Other constant plants (in 75% or more of plots attributed to this type) include <i>Carphephorus bellidifolius, Cnidoscolus stimulosus, Diospyros virginiana, Euphorbia ipecacuanhae, Gaylussacia dumosa, Gaylussacia frondosa, Morella cerifera, Morella pumila, Pityopsis graminifolia, Sericocarpus tortifolius, Sassafras albidum, Tragia urens, Vaccinium stamineum</i>, and <i>Vaccinium tenellum</i>. Lichens and specialized psammophytes, such as <i>Stipulicida setacea</i> and <i>Minuartia caroliniana (= Arenaria caroliniana)</i>, may be present but are minor in abundance in comparison with <i>Aristida stricta</i>. It is distinguished from other community types by the presence of a scrub oak layer strongly dominated by <i>Quercus laevis</i>. This type is distinguished from ~<i>Pinus palustris / Quercus laevis - Quercus geminata / Vaccinium tenellum / Aristida stricta</i> Woodland (CEGL003589)$$ by the absence of characteristic coastal fringe flora, such as <i>Cladina evansii, Rhynchospora megalocarpa, Ilex vomitoria</i>, and <i>Quercus geminata</i>.
