Description: This is one of the driest longleaf pine types on the Atlantic Coastal Plain, north of central South Carolina. It is the typical xeric sandhill <i>Pinus palustris</i>-dominated association, within the range of <i>Aristida stricta</i>. The open canopy is dominated by <i>Pinus palustris</i>. The subcanopy is characteristically dominated by <i>Quercus laevis</i>. The herbaceous stratum contains <i>Aristida stricta</i>, with the lichen <i>Cladonia</i> spp. Fire frequencies are naturally low in this vegetation because of lack of fuel.
