Name: Laplacea haematoxylon - Clethra occidentalis - Calophyllum antillanum Forest
Reference: Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...
Description: Successional association established following disturbance of the former Laplacea - Solanum - Turpinia Forest, mostly by selective cutting of larger trees for timber. Small trees and tall weedy shrubs (e.g., Piper spp. and Goldfusia colorata) replace the original structure of the forest; the original association's species composition and coverage change by prevalence, under-representation, or absence of many of its associates. Clethra occidentalis, Matayba apetala, Alchornea latifolia, and small individuals of Calophyllum antillanum (= Calophyllum calaba) are usually abundant. Other species may include Laplacea haematoxylon, Guarea swartzii, Sapium laurifolium (= Sapium jamaicense), Solanum punctulatum, Hedyosmum arborescens, Turpinia occidentalis, and others. DISTRIBUTION: Jamaica: The Blue Mountains range.
