Name: Fagus grandifolia - Quercus alba / Kalmia latifolia - Rhododendron canescens - Symplocos tinctoria Forest
Reference: Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...
Description: This temporarily flooded forest occurs in the floodplain of small streams in ravines of the Ridge and Valley and adjacent Piedmont of Alabama. Frequency and duration of flooding are not known, but the duration probably is not long. The canopy is fairly open and dominated by Fagus grandifolia, Quercus alba, Liquidambar styraciflua, Liriodendron tulipifera, and Acer rubrum var. rubrum. The shrub layer contains Kalmia latifolia, Rhododendron canescens, Symplocos tinctoria, Hamamelis virginiana, Oxydendrum arboreum, Arundinaria gigantea, Acer leucoderme, and Hydrangea quercifolia. The herbaceous layer may contain Carex picta, Mitchella repens, Chimaphila maculata, Uvularia sessilifolia, Toxicodendron radicans, and Polystichum acrostichoides, and varies somewhat from stand to stand. The hydrology of stands assigned here is variously interpreted as mesic (not a wetland), temporarily flooded, and intermittently flooded. As is typical with examples of this alliance, flooding may be for very short duration and does not strongly affect the floristics of the type.
