Description:
This association includes saturated shrub thickets of the East Gulf and South Atlantic coastal plains, occurring on seepage slopes and in poorly drained flats and depressions. Characteristic species are <i>Ilex coriacea, Lyonia lucida, Smilax laurifolia, Clethra alnifolia</i>, and <i>Photinia pyrifolia (= Aronia arbutifolia)</i>. In Louisiana, this includes overgrown savannas. In an example from a seepage slope on Fort Gordon, Georgia, the dominant shrubs are <i>Lyonia lucida</i> and <i>Lyonia ligustrina</i>. Other shrubs and woody plants include <i>Ilex glabra, Morella caroliniensis (= Myrica heterophylla), Rhododendron</i> sp., <i>Liquidambar styraciflua, Alnus serrulata, Rhus copallinum, Acer rubrum, Morella cerifera (= Myrica cerifera), Vaccinium tenellum, Gaylussacia frondosa, Gaylussacia dumosa</i>, and <i>Gordonia lasianthus</i>. Herb layer dominants are <i>Osmunda cinnamomea</i> and <i>Chasmanthium laxum</i>?. Other herbs present include <i>Xyris</i> sp., <i>Eupatorium rotundifolium, Rhexia</i> sp., <i>Pteridium aquilinum, Agalinis</i> sp., <i>Rubus</i> sp., <i>Polygala lutea, Andropogon gyrans, Panicum</i> sp., and <i>Cuscuta</i> sp. A prominent vine is <i>Smilax laurifolia</i>.
