Description: This forest occurs in the most mesic canyons of the Guadalupe Mountains in the Trans-Pecos of Texas. It is dominated by the two nominal species. Other species which may occur in small numbers are the deciduous <i>Ostrya knowltonii</i> and the evergreen <i>Arbutus xalapensis, Juniperus deppeana, Pinus edulis, Pinus ponderosa var. scopulorum</i>, and <i>Quercus grisea</i>. The shrub and herb strata are relatively sparse. This forest occurs in the most sheltered habitats, on upper stream terraces and canyonheads. This community grades to slightly less mesic mixed evergreen-deciduous forests and woodlands.
