Description:
This community occurs on hydric, acidic silt loams (Encrow, Gilbert, and Springfield series), on broad, low flats, in small to large depressional areas, and along small, intermittent, ill-defined drainages ('slashes'), on the Pleistocene prairie terraces in the southwestern portion of the Florida parishes of southeastern Louisiana. Characteristic canopy trees include <i>Pinus glabra, Quercus laurifolia, Quercus phellos, Quercus michauxii, Quercus nigra, Quercus pagoda, Quercus virginiana, Pinus taeda, Nyssa biflora, Nyssa sylvatica, Magnolia grandiflora, Salix nigra, Liquidambar styraciflua, Carya glabra, Acer rubrum</i>, and <i>Fraxinus pennsylvanica</i>. Understory trees and shrubs include <i>Crataegus opaca</i> and <i>Sabal minor</i> (often very abundant or dominant), <i>Arundinaria gigantea ssp. tecta, Cephalanthus occidentalis, Diospyros virginiana, Cornus foemina, Crataegus viridis, Ilex opaca var. opaca, Ilex decidua, Itea virginica, Morella cerifera (= Myrica cerifera), Sambucus canadensis, Styrax americanus</i>, and <i>Viburnum dentatum</i>. Woody vines include <i>Ampelopsis arborea, Berchemia scandens, Brunnichia ovata, Campsis radicans, Toxicodendron radicans ssp. radicans, Smilax glauca, Smilax rotundifolia</i>, and <i>Vitis rotundifolia</i>. Herbs include <i>Boehmeria cylindrica, Carex</i> spp., <i>Chasmanthium latifolium, Chasmanthium laxum, Chasmanthium sessiliflorum, Cyperus</i> spp., <i>Gratiola virginiana, Hygrophila lacustris, Juncus</i> spp., <i>Justicia ovata, Ludwigia</i> spp., <i>Lycopus rubellus, Lycopus virginicus, Lysimachia radicans, Onoclea sensibilis, Osmunda regalis var. spectabilis, Phanopyrum gymnocarpon, Polygonum</i> spp., <i>Rhynchospora</i> spp., <i>Sabatia calycina, Saccharum giganteum, Saururus cernuus, Scirpus cyperinus, Schoenoplectus</i> spp. (= <i>Scirpus</i> spp.), <i>Solidago gigantea, Thelypteris palustris var. pubescens, Triadenum walteri, Vernonia gigantea</i>, and <i>Woodwardia areolata</i>.
