In Texas, <i>Juniperus scopulorum</i> forms nearly pure stands on mesic slopes and in canyons along the Caprock escarpment (the escarpment area between the High Plains and Rolling Plains in northwestern Texas), surrounded by <i>Juniperus pinchotii</i>-grassland communities (Diamond 1993).
