Name: Eremochloa ophiuroides Planted Herbaceous Vegetation
Reference: Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...
Description: This herbaceous association is currently only known from Cape Lookout National Seashore in North Carolina, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. The site where this vegetation occurs is a swale that is prone to storm surges but otherwise probably above tidal influence. Soil is poorly drained sand. The unvegetated surface is dominated by bare sand (90% cover) with some leaf litter (10%). It is likely that Eremochloa ophiuroides was planted or naturalized here. This particular site is outside any exclosure and is being grazed by horses. However, it is similar to vegetation within an adjacent exclosure and to many other swales on the island. Other evidence of disturbance includes the presence of exotic plants species. Vegetation is dominated by a moderately dense (70% cover) herbaceous layer of the non-native grass Eremochloa ophiuroides, along with additional native graminoids, such as Andropogon glomeratus, Eragrostis spectabilis, Fimbristylis caroliniana, Spartina patens, and Uniola paniculata, and native forbs, such as Centella erecta, Hydrocotyle bonariensis, Polypremum procumbens, and Sabatia stellaris, among others. Despite its likely anthropogenic origins, this community supports several state-vulnerable species, including Eustachys petraea, Juncus megacephalus, Phyla nodiflora, and Rhynchospora colorata.
