Description:
This association is a mesic to dry-mesic calcareous forest occurring over limestone in the Florida Panhandle. It has floristic affinities to calcareous forests of the interior South, but also has many species of the southeastern Coastal Plain, including the palms <i>Sabal minor</i> and <i>Rhapidophyllum hystrix</i>. The canopy is dominated by <i>Fraxinus americana, Juglans nigra, Ulmus rubra, Celtis laevigata, Quercus shumardii, Quercus muehlenbergii, Acer barbatum</i>, and <i>Tilia americana var. caroliniana</i>. The subcanopy is dominated by <i>Acer barbatum</i> and <i>Ostrya virginiana</i>, but also contains <i>Carpinus caroliniana ssp. caroliniana, Juniperus virginiana var. virginiana, Cercis canadensis, Morus rubra</i>, and canopy species. Shrubs and woody vines include <i>Ptelea trifoliata, Aesculus pavia var. pavia, Hydrangea quercifolia, Rhapidophyllum hystrix, Sabal minor, Symphoricarpos orbiculatus, Decumaria barbara, Frangula caroliniana, Forestiera ligustrina, Matelea</i> sp., <i>Toxicodendron radicans, Euonymus americanus, Bignonia capreolata</i>, and <i>Callicarpa americana</i>. Herbaceous species include <i>Thelypteris kunthii, Pachysandra procumbens, Aristolochia serpentaria, Spigelia marilandica, Viola walteri, Sanicula</i> spp., <i>Phryma leptostachya, Carex basiantha, Dioscorea quaternata, Sanguinaria canadensis</i>, and <i>Smallanthus uvedalius</i>.
