Description: This association is a shrubland of the upper, dry part of the scour zone of larger streams and rivers on exposed bedrock. It is typically found on the south-facing sides of river valleys in the Ouachita Mountains ecoregion. These areas are scoured by floods that reach 5 m or more above normal summer pools. Juniperus virginiana var. virginiana and Leptopus phyllanthoides (= Andrachne phyllanthoides) are characteristic and usually dominant. Quercus nigra and Ilex vomitoria may also be present in some examples.
