Name: Bouteloua curtipendula - Bouteloua (eriopoda, gracilis) Herbaceous Vegetation
Reference: Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...
Description: This grassland association is found in Texas and may also occur in Oklahoma and northern Mexico. It is currently only described from Lake Meredith National Recreation Area in Texas. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. The composition and structure of this community are influenced by climate, soil (texture and depth), topography, natural fire, and grazing pressure. It occurs on moderately deep, upland soils that are usually calcareous and of a loamy texture. Terrain is usually moderately sloping to rolling but may be steep in some cases. Infiltration is moderately rapid to moderately slow and runoff is moderate. This community occurs on uplands dominated by herbaceous species, mainly mid and short grasses. Bouteloua curtipendula is usually the dominant species, with lesser amounts of Bouteloua gracilis, Bouteloua eriopoda, Bouteloua hirsuta, Sporobolus cryptandrus, and Aristida purpurea. Forbs make up less than 10% of the community with the major species being Sphaeralcea coccinea, Chaetopappa ericoides (= Leucelene ericoides), Liatris punctata, Krameria lanceolata, Zinnia grandiflora, Tetraneuris scaposa, Gutierrezia sarothrae, and Ambrosia psilostachya. There are a few short shrubs present, mainly Mimosa aculeaticarpa var. biuncifera (= Mimosa biuncifera), Yucca glauca, Prosopis glandulosa, and Rhus trilobata. Occasional Opuntia macrorhiza also occurs.
