Description:
This association is known from moist, north-facing, calcareous lower slopes of Mount Magazine (Arkansas River Valley, Magazine Mountain Subsection, Logan County, Arkansas); it ranges into the Boston Mountains, and possibly in areas of the Ouachita Mountains. Canopy species include <i>Acer barbatum, Acer saccharum, Fraxinus americana, Juglans nigra, Carya cordiformis, Tilia americana (var. americana</i> and/or <i>Tilia americana var. caroliniana), Celtis laevigata, Gleditsia triacanthos, Ulmus alata, Ulmus americana</i>, and <i>Ulmus rubra</i>. Forests of this alliance are typically not oak-dominated, but <i>Quercus rubra, Quercus alba, Quercus shumardii</i>, and <i>Quercus muehlenbergii</i> may be present at low frequency or in areas transitional to stands of greater oak dominance. The subcanopy stratum may include <i>Acer barbatum, Acer saccharum, Aesculus glabra var. glabra, Asimina triloba, Carpinus caroliniana, Cercis canadensis, Morus rubra</i>, and <i>Ostrya virginiana</i>. Shrubs and woody vines may include, in addition to smaller examples of subcanopy species, <i>Arundinaria gigantea, Berchemia scandens, Bignonia capreolata, Cocculus carolinus, Cornus drummondii, Crataegus calpodendron, Crataegus</i> spp., <i>Euonymus americanus, Euonymus atropurpureus, Frangula caroliniana, Hydrangea arborescens, Ilex decidua, Lindera benzoin, Menispermum canadense, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, Ptelea trifoliata, Sideroxylon lycioides, Smilax bona-nox, Symphoricarpos orbiculatus, Toxicodendron radicans, Viburnum rufidulum</i>, and <i>Vitis aestivalis</i>. Herbaceous species include <i>Hybanthus concolor</i> (which may dominate the stratum), <i>Actaea pachypoda, Brachyelytrum erectum, Cardamine concatenata, Carex</i> spp. (including possibly <i>Carex albicans var. albicans (= Carex artitecta), Carex blanda, Carex cephalophora, Carex cherokeensis, Carex muehlenbergii), Caulophyllum thalictroides, Chasmanthium latifolium, Cynoglossum virginianum, Dioscorea quaternata, Galium</i> sp., <i>Laportea canadensis, Phryma leptostachya, Podophyllum peltatum, Sanguinaria canadensis, Polygonatum biflorum, Sanicula</i> sp., <i>Trillium recurvatum, Trillium viridescens</i>, and <i>Uvularia grandiflora</i>.
