Description: This community is a weakly minerotrophic or perhaps ombrotrophic peatland dominated by tall, deciduous, ericaceous shrubs and peat mosses. The water is usually nutrient poor and acidic. The dominant shrub is usually <i>Vaccinium corymbosum</i>. Other associated shrubs include <i>Photinia melanocarpa (= Aronia melanocarpa), Gaylussacia baccata, Ilex verticillata</i>, and <i>Nemopanthus mucronatus</i>. Characteristic herbs include <i>Calla palustris, Carex trisperma, Osmunda cinnamomea, Sarracenia purpurea</i>, and <i>Maianthemum trifolium (= Smilacina trifolia)</i>. Characteristic peat mosses include <i>Sphagnum centrale, Sphagnum fimbriatum, Sphagnum magellanicum</i>, and <i>Sphagnum capillifolium (= Sphagnum nemoreum)</i>. Stunted trees, including <i>Acer rubrum</i>, may be present at a low density and less than 25% cover.
