Description: This community type is found in the north-central portion of the Great Plains of the United States and Canada. Stands occur along the upper portions of river valleys slopes, ravines, and moraine hills. In North Dakota, this community occurs on nearly level to hilly glacial till uplands along the edge of the Turtle Mountains. The tree canopy of this community is open, with individual or clumped <i>Quercus macrocarpa</i> trees and scattered shrubs in a matrix of graminoid-dominated understory. Common shrubs include <i>Symphoricarpos occidentalis</i> and <i>Prunus virginiana</i>. Frequent grasses include <i>Elymus canadensis, Nassella viridula, Pascopyrum smithii, Elymus caninus (= Agropyron caninum)</i>, and <i>Muhlenbergia racemosa</i>. Forbs may include <i>Anemone canadensis, Anemone cylindrica, Heuchera richardsonii, Vicia americana, Asclepias verticillata</i>, and <i>Galium boreale</i>.
