Description: This post oak - blackjack oak woodland type is found in the southeastern Great Plains and tallgrass prairie areas, sometimes called the Cross Timbers region, of the United States. Stands are found on ridgetops and gently to steeply sloping hillsides. Soils are shallow to moderately deep, sandy to loamy, and somewhat poorly drained to well-drained. The parent material is typically sandstone. The vegetation structure is an open canopy of trees. Dominant species include <i>Quercus stellata</i> and <i>Quercus marilandica</i>, with occasional <i>Quercus prinoides</i> and <i>Celtis tenuifolia</i>. The shrub layer is often absent. The ground layer consists of <i>Schizachyrium scoparium, Andropogon gerardii</i>, and <i>Sorghastrum nutans</i>.
