Reference: Midwestern Ecology Working Group...
Description: This community occurs in dune fields and on the most stable dune ridges in the southern Great Lakes region of the United States and Canada, especially around Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. The canopy is typically open (25-80% cover) and may even be scrubby due to wind damage. The most common dominant is Populus deltoides, often in association with Juniperus virginiana. Quercus spp. (including Quercus macrocarpa, Quercus rubra, and Quercus velutina) may occur, particularly when there are adjacent oak forests. Shrub and vine species include Cornus drummondii, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, Rhus typhina, Salix amygdaloides, Salix exigua, Salix fragilis, and Vitis riparia. Morella pensylvanica (= Myrica pensylvanica) is common at Presque Isle in Pennsylvania. Herbaceous species are scattered, but include Asclepias syriaca, Elymus virginicus, Rumex acetosella, Schizachyrium scoparium, and Strophostyles helvula.
