Description: This pine-hardwoods community is found in the 'Driftless Region' of southeastern Minnesota, United States. Stands occur on moist, steep north-facing slopes with thin soils, and are usually associated with cliffs, talus slopes, and bedrock outcrops. The tree canopy includes any combination of <i>Abies balsamea, Betula alleghaniensis</i>, and <i>Pinus strobus</i>. The shrub layer contains <i>Acer spicatum, Taxus canadensis</i>, and <i>Viburnum opulus var. americanum (= Viburnum trilobum)</i>. Characteristic herbaceous species include <i>Allium cernuum, Equisetum scirpoides, Streptopus lanceolatus var. longipes (= Streptopus roseus)</i>, and, more rarely, <i>Cornus canadensis</i>.
