Name: Carex aquatilis - Glyceria striata Fen Herbaceous Vegetation
Reference: Midwestern Ecology Working Group...
Description: This water sedge fen community type is found in central Canada. Stands occur in basins, where the hydrology is seasonally flooded, but the water table may drop below the fen surface by midsummer. Layers of humic or mesic peat from 40-100 cm in thickness may form a continuous mat, although central pools with exposed mineral soil may be present. The vegetation is dominated by sedges. Characteristic plant species include Carex aquatilis, Glyceria striata, Calamagrostis stricta, Typha latifolia, Phragmites australis, Salix interior, and Salix candida. Aquatic species common in open pools include Potamogeton gramineus, Utricularia macrorhiza (= Utricularia vulgaris), Chara sp., and Nymphaea tetragona.
