Name: Carex aquatilis - Carex spp. Herbaceous Vegetation
Reference: Midwestern Ecology Working Group...
Description: This water sedge community type is found in the northern Great Plains and northern tallgrass prairie region of the United States and Canada. Stands typically occur in depressions or around ponds or lakes, although they may also develop adjacent to streams or rivers. They are flooded for some time during the growing season in most years and have mostly mineral soils in fresh or slightly saline water. The vegetation is dominated by graminoids approximately 0.4-0.7 m tall. Carex spp. predominate, especially Carex aquatilis, as well as Carex rostrata, Carex lacustris, and Carex stricta. Eleocharis palustris, Schoenoplectus spp. (= Scirpus spp.), and Typha spp. may all be found in this community. Scolochloa festucacea may be found in drier stands. Woody species are rare, but shrub species may include Salix spp.
