Name: Pinus contorta var. contorta / Gaultheria shallon / Cladina spp. Woodland
Reference:
Description: This very poor, open, scrubby coniferous community is located on outcrops with only the driest shedding upper slope and crest positions. Although rare in the northerly mainland districts, it has a potentially wide geographic range from sea level to approximately 850 m elevation in the montane (lower in the north along the mainland coast); it occurs from western to northern Vancouver Island, and along the windward Coast Mountains from the Fraser River valley northward to conceivably the Prince Rupert area. The soils are the poorest rapidly drained thin veneers of organic materials, or thin veneers of morainal or colluvial materials directly over ridged or hummocky bedrock, within a mosaic of essentially bare rock outcrops. The open scrubby tree layer is dominated by Pinus contorta var. contorta, with Thuja plicata and Tsuga heterophylla at lower elevations, or with Chamaecyparis nootkatensis (= Callitropsis nootkatensis) and Tsuga mertensiana at higher montane elevations. The moderately developed shrub layer is dominated by Gaultheria shallon, with lesser variable coverage of conifer regeneration. The herb layer is very sparse. Hylocomium splendens, Pleurozium schreberi, Cladina spp., and Racomitrium spp. are common in the moderately developed moss layer. These sites are distinguished by their scrubby open tree structure, the presence of a mosaic of bare rock outcrops, and good coverage of Cladina spp. and Racomitrium spp. in the bryoid layer.
