Name: Tsuga heterophylla / Hylocomium splendens - Pleurozium schreberi Forest
Reference:
Description: This small- to large-patch forest community occurs on nutrient-poor, coarse sandy or skeletal soils on upper slopes or ridge crests or on gravelly glaciofluvial outwash in coastal British Columbia. These sites occur at elevations from 10 to 1000 m on the eastern slopes of the Coast Mountains north of Knight Inlet and in the Hazelton Mountains from upper Kitlope to Alice Arm. Tsuga heterophylla dominates the overstory which sometimes has low to moderate cover of Pinus contorta and Thuja plicata. The poorly developed shrub layer is dominated by moderate cover of regenerating Tsuga heterophylla, often with low cover of Thuja plicata and Vaccinium alaskaensis. The sparse, poorly developed forb layer is variable but often has low to very low cover of Cornus canadensis and Orthilia secunda. The moss layer is well-developed and is dominated by high cover of Hylocomium splendens and Pleurozium schreberi. This community is distinguished from similar dry forests by the absence of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi.
