Name: Pseudotsuga menziesii - Pinus contorta - (Tsuga heterophylla) / Vaccinium membranaceum / Arctostaphylos uva-ursi Woodland
Reference:
Description: This small-patch woodland community occurs in the submaritime and subcontinental region of southwestern British Columbia on nutrient-deficient dry crests and upper slopes with shallow soils. The range of this plant community is from 0 to 700 m on low elevations in submaritime and subcontinental areas north of Knight Inlet and in the lower elevations in drainages of the upper Fraser Valley east and north of Chilliwack, and in the eastern Coast Mountains from upper Harrison Lake to the Homathko River. This community has an open coniferous canopy, moderate shrub layer with lots of regenerating conifers, sparse forb layer dominated by Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, and well-developed moss layer dominated by mixed feathermosses and Cladonia lichens. Moderate cover of Pseudotsuga menziesii and Pinus contorta dominate the overstory, often with a low to moderate cover of Tsuga heterophylla. Moderate covers of Tsuga heterophylla and Vaccinium membranaceum characterize the shrub layer together with low to moderate covers of regenerating Pinus contorta and Thuja plicata. The poorly developed herb layer is characterized by low to moderate cover of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, often with low to moderate cover of Chimaphila umbellata and low cover of Goodyera oblongifolia and Linnaea borealis. The moss layer is variable, diverse and well-developed. High cover of Pleurozium schreberi, moderate cover of Hylocomium splendens and Cladonia bellidiflora, and low cover of Cladina rangiferina are fairly constant.
