Name: Picea sitchensis / Malus fusca / Carex obnupta Forest
Reference:
Description: This small-patch coniferous forest community occurs along the backshore of estuaries and tidal sloughs along coastal British Columbia. The range of this plant community occurs on western and northern Vancouver Island and along the outer coast west of the Coast Mountains and Kitimat Ranges of British Columbia. Soils are usually loamy or sandy and are usually derived from fluvial materials, often with a thin organic cap. This small-patch coniferous forest community has an open overstory growing on mounds, a moderate to well-developed shrub layer dominated by Malus fusca and Rubus spectabilis, a moderate herb layer characterized by Carex obnupta and Lysichiton americanus, and a moderate moss layer dominated by leafy mosses. Picea sitchensis dominates the overstory, with low cover of Thuja plicata. Moderate to high cover of Rubus spectabilis and Malus fusca with moderate cover of Gaultheria shallon characterize the shrub layer. The herb layer is usually well-developed and dominated by high cover of Carex obnupta and moderate cover of Lysichiton americanus. The moderately well-developed moss layer consists primarily of Eurhynchium praelongum with low to moderate cover of Rhizomnium punctatum and Eurhynchium oreganum.
