Description: This association is defined from the Santa Monica Mountains region. It is likely to be extremely widespread throughout cismontane California. This herbaceous association occurs on gentle to steep often northwest- or southwest-facing slopes at low elevations between 165 and 268 m. <i>Avena fatua</i> is characteristically abundant in the herbaceous layer, and <i>Bromus diandrus</i> and <i>Brassica nigra</i> are often present. <i>Lotus scoparius, Baccharis pilularis</i>, and <i>Artemisia californica</i> are sometimes found in the shrub layer at low cover, and <i>Quercus agrifolia</i> is infrequently in the tree layer at low cover.
