Name: Acer rubrum - Fraxinus pennsylvanica / Lindera benzoin / Osmunda regalis - Pedicularis lanceolata Forest
Reference: Govus, T. 2011. Documentation of...
Description: This red maple forested seep community type is found in the Southern Blue Ridge of Georgia, occurring in a zone of ultramafic rock that encircles Brasstown Bald. Stands occur on flat to gently sloping sites near stream headwaters. The source of hydrology is from a combination of groundwater seepage and input from storm events. The soils in this forested fen are poorly drained, ranging seasonally from saturated to moist. The parent material is a mixture of amphibolite and ultramafics (including dunite). Hydrophytic plants dominate the vegetation. The overstory is composed of mixed deciduous hardwoods with a partially open canopy that is 20-30 m tall. Typical tree dominants include Acer rubrum var. trilobum, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, and Liriodendron tulipifera. Other woody associates occur as minor components and include Cornus florida and Pinus strobus. The subcanopy is medium to tall in height (10-15 m) and is generally well-developed. The shrub layer is moderately well-developed. Species present include Lindera benzoin and Alnus serrulata. The ground cover is composed of mixed sedges, ferns, and forbs. Species present include Pedicularis lanceolata, Juncus coriaceus, Carex gynandra, Lobelia siphilitica, Dichanthelium clandestinum, Onoclea sensibilis, Scirpus polyphyllus, Solidago patula, Oxypolis rigidior, Boehmeria cylindrica, and Spiranthes ovalis. Dense hummocks of mosses can be prominent in areas of shallow ponding, including Thuidium delicatulum.
