Description:
This association is a saturated longleaf pine woodland from southern portions of the East Gulf Coastal Plain, originally defined based on data from southern areas of De Soto National Forest, including Camp Shelby. The canopy is primarily <i>Pinus palustris</i>, with less <i>Pinus elliottii var. elliottii</i>. The canopy and/or subcanopy also contains <i>Acer rubrum, Liriodendron tulipifera, Nyssa biflora, Magnolia virginiana</i>, and <i>Liquidambar styraciflua</i>. The ground layer is shrub-dominated, with <i>Ilex coriacea, Nyssa biflora, Cliftonia monophylla</i>, and <i>Cyrilla racemiflora</i> generally the most abundant shrubs; other tall shrubs include <i>Morella cerifera (= Myrica cerifera), Morella caroliniensis (= Myrica heterophylla), Ilex vomitoria, Ilex glabra, Persea borbonia, Photinia pyrifolia (= Aronia arbutifolia), Osmanthus americanus var. americanus</i> (rarely), and <i>Arundinaria gigantea</i>. Low shrubs include <i>Gaylussacia mosieri, Lyonia lucida, Rhododendron viscosum (= Rhododendron serrulatum)</i>, and <i>Hypericum brachyphyllum</i>. Herbs include <i>Andropogon</i> spp., <i>Aristida purpurascens var. virgata, Aristida purpurascens var. tenuispica, Carphephorus odoratissimus, Solidago rugosa</i>, and <i>Osmunda cinnamomea</i>; <i>Sphagnum</i> spp. may also be present.
