Name: Pinus contorta / Deschampsia cespitosa Swamp Forest
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This forest association has a rather open overstory and continuous grass layer, and many stands would better be classified as woodlands. The tree canopy is dominated by Pinus contorta, generally the only conifer, with 50% cover. Deschampsia cespitosa dominates the graminoid layer. Other common herbaceous plants are Thalictrum occidentale, Poa pratensis, and Juncus arcticus ssp. littoralis. Stands occur in the eastern Cascades of Oregon at flat sites between 1220-2290 m (4000-7500 feet) and possibly in California. The sites are typically adjacent to meadows or wetlands, or within slightly concave sites. Soils are variable, but silty loams may be most common.
