Name: Pinus contorta / Festuca idahoensis Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This woodland association is found in central Idaho and central Oregon. Stands are mostly found at mid to lower elevations of the subalpine zone between 1590 to 2286 m (5200-7500 feet) on gentle terrain of glacial moraines, outwashes, and terraced lands. In Idaho, soils are primarily of quartz monzonite or granitic but may occasionally be of andesite or quartzite. In Oregon, soils are generally deep, Mazama ash. Pinus contorta dominates the overstory and is usually the only conifer present. However, Pinus albicaulis may infrequently occur. The sparse herbaceus understory is dominated by Festuca idahoensis. Other herbaceus vegetation includes Achnatherum occidentale ssp. occidentale, Arenaria, Antennaria, Carex geyeri, Carex rossii, and Penstemon, but all have low to moderate cover.
