Name: Pinus contorta var. murrayana - Populus tremuloides / Spiraea douglasii Swamp Forest
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is described from the East Cascades ecoregion of Oregon and may be found in California. Sites are inactive floodplains in small, pumice-filled drainages at moderate elevations. Populus tremuloides is dominant in the tree overstory forming a moderately dense canopy. Spiraea douglasii forms a dense shrub layer. Symphoricarpos albus and Arctostaphylos uva-ursi are occasionally well represented. Commonly associated grasses and forbs are Bromus anomalus, Elymus glaucus, Galium boreale, Maianthemum stellatum, Artemisia ludoviciana, Fragaria virginiana, Chamerion angustifolium, Achillea millefolium, and Viola adunca. This association is successional to ~Pinus contorta / Spiraea douglasii Forest (CEGL002604)$$ except at very low elevations, where Populus tremuloides is climax. With overuse by livestock, Populus tremuloides is still well-stocked in the overstory but suckers are limited. Spiraea douglasii decreases in cover and Carex angustata is codominant with Elymus glaucus, Poa pratensis, and/or forbs. Populus tremuloides is sensitive to all but the coolest ground fire. It may cause immediate mortality or damage the bole, allowing entrance for wood-rotting fungi. Populus tremuloides sprouts vigorously from lateral root buds. Reduced evapotransporation demand caused by removal of the overstory may elevate water tables, increase the cover of Salix spp. and interfere with the success of Populus tremuloides regeneration. Salix spp. and Spiraea douglasii will sprout from stem bases. Clearcutting will favor Populus tremuloides while partial cutting will favor Pinus contorta. Cutting may increase the level of the water table and increase the cover of willows.
