Description: This association occurs commonly at Mount Rainier and rarely in the North Cascades and the Olympic Mountains. Sites tend to be moist and well-drained, with more snow than average for middle elevations. Aspects tend to be northerly. The canopy is dominated or codominated by <i>Abies amabilis</i> with <i>Tsuga heterophylla</i> usually prominent to codominant. <i>Pseudotsuga menziesii</i> is occasionally prominent. The well-developed shrub layer is codominated by <i>Menziesia ferruginea</i> and one or more of the following: <i>Vaccinium alaskaense, Vaccinium membranaceum</i>, and <i>Vaccinium ovalifolium</i>. The herb layer is variable. <i>Clintonia uniflora, Orthilia secunda, Rubus lasiococcus</i>, and <i>Rubus pedatus</i> are usually present. <i>Xerophyllum tenax</i> or <i>Erythronium montanum</i> can be prominent to codominant.
