Description: This association occurs in the Cascade Range and Olympic Mountains at middle to high elevations on northerly aspects. Sites occur on middle to upper slopes and are often steep with rocky or shallow well-drained soils. <i>Abies amabilis</i> dominates the canopy or codominates with <i>Tsuga heterophylla, Abies lasiocarpa</i>, or <i>Pseudotsuga menziesii</i>. The often dense shrub layer is dominated or codominated by <i>Rhododendron albiflorum</i>. <i>Vaccinium membranaceum</i> is usually prominent to codominant. <i>Vaccinium alaskaense</i> or <i>Menziesia ferruginea</i> are occasionally codominant. The herb layer is variable in composition and density. <i>Rubus lasiococcus</i> is the only consistent herb, and is sometimes prominent. <i>Valeriana sitchensis, Orthilia secunda</i>, and <i>Rubus pedatus</i> are frequent. <i>Erythronium montanum</i> is occasionally prominent to codominant.
