Name: Pseudotsuga menziesii / Holodiscus discolor / Carex geyeri Forest
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is reported from the east side of the Cascades in Oregon and Washington. Riparian geomorphic surfaces on which it occurs are terraces that are very infrequently (if ever) flooded. Valleys are south to southwest-facing, narrow, steep to very steep and V-shaped with gentle sideslopes. Valleys are south-facing. Water tables depth are probably well below the rooting zone throughout the growing season. Pseudotsuga menziesii is the dominant overstory conifer and can be either dense or scattered. The shrub overstory (averaging 3 m in height) is dominated by Holodiscus discolor, and the shrub understory (averaging 1 m in height) is dominated by a Symphoricarpos albus with occasional scattered Spiraea betulifolia, Ribes lacustre, Rosa woodsii, and Rosa gymnocarpa. The herbaceous layer (averaging 31 cm in height) is dominated by graminoids, generally either Carex geyeri or Calamagrostis rubescens, with scattered grasses and forbs at low cover such as Elymus glaucus, Viola canadensis, Galium triflorum, Maianthemum stellatum, and Prosartes trachycarpa. This association is not expected to succeed to another unless there is an abundance of white fir or grand fir seedlings found on the site. Moderate- to high-intensity fires will kill Pseudotsuga menziesii but not the associated shrubs, which will resprout vigorously from root crowns following fires.
