Name: Tsuga heterophylla - (Pseudotsuga menziesii) / Oplopanax horridus / Polystichum munitum Forest Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019 Description: This association occurs in the western Cascades and on the Olympic Peninsula at low to moderate elevations on lower slopes, terraces or depressions and is often associated with springs, seeps, or streams. Soils are subirrigated and poorly drained due to a shallow to impermeable layer that perches moving groundwater. The canopy is a variable mixture of <i>Tsuga heterophylla, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Thuja plicata</i>, and/or <i>Alnus rubra</i>. <i>Tsuga heterophylla</i> or <i>Thuja plicata</i> always occupy at least 10% total cover and dominate tree regeneration. <i>Oplopanax horridus</i> (over 10% cover) codominates or dominates the shrub layer. <i>Acer circinatum</i> and <i>Rubus spectabilis</i> are frequent and sometimes codominant. The well-developed, diverse herb layer almost always has <i>Polystichum munitum</i> present to codominant.
